How Vogue Magazine Put Fur Coats on the Map

Fashionistas everywhere know about Anna Wintour’s love affair with fur coats. In fact, while waiting for the Chanel show to start at the Paris Fashion Week in 2005, the worldwide fashion priestess–known to many as the famed editor-in-chief of Vogue—Wintour seemed to be one who can’t get enough of fur, declaring that people should wear more fur. Wintour’s passion for fur, of course, is often reflected in the pages of Vogue magazine, the so-called Style Bible.

Vogue magazine also has its own editions in other countries, and supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss have been featured in the covers, donning lavish fur coats and accessories. Perhaps one of the most memorable covers of the magazine that featured fur clothing was the one with Naomi Campbell for Vogue Russia December 2008. Here, Campbell is all covered up in fur, with her lovely eyes staring straight into the readers’ eyes.

Now, as fur clothing made a strong showing in fashion runways last fall, with fashion insiders hailing fur as one of the biggest trends for next season, signs indicate that fur is here to stay. As Wintour herself declares, “Fashion means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Vogue is there to report on the fashion industry. Fur is part of fashion and we will continue to report on it as long as that is the case.”
